ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HELPING PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH
DISABIITIES
Program
Goals:
1. To give families the skills and support they need to help
their children with special needs reach their full potential.
2. To recruit and train volunteers to provide families with assistance regarding
their child’s education and development and to support them in dealing with the
challenges of raising a child with special needs.
Program
Outcome:
Caregivers feel less isolated and more confident in their role
as parents of a child with special needs.
Qualifications:
1.
Interest in
working with parents of children with disabilities or special health needs
2.
Able to
volunteer between 4-5 hours monthly in agreed upon activities
3.
Willingness
to increase their knowledge, build skills, and support families
4.
Recognize
that the parents are the primary decision-makers about their child and respect
their decisions
5.
Have good
interpersonal skills
6.
Be non
judgmental
7.
Ability to
participate in training and benefit from constructive guidance
8.
Commit to
the value of confidentiality
9.
Be
dependable
10.
Have a
positive outlook
Training and
supervision is offered.
Volunteer
activities may include:
1. Answering the Helpline
2. Responding to inquiries from parents regarding information
about the nature of a disabling condition and/or resources in the community
3. Providing parents with information about their parental
rights or information on the early intervention or special education process
4. Preparing parents for IFSP or IEP meetings under staff
guidance
5. Supporting parents at IFSP or IEP meetings with agency
approval and support
6. Supporting parents in mediating conflicts with schools and
early intervention
7. Assisting parents at parent support groups or helping to
start one
8. Representing ASCF at community and school meetings and
events as requested
9.
10. Helping at HPC activities and trainings by greeting
parents, manning tables etc.
11. Assisting with clerical help in fulfilling grant
requirements, i.e.. making phone calls to collect data
