Highlands Parent Center

We are in our second year of the Highlands Parent Center, the only Community Parent Resource Center in New Jersey funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. This program serves families of babies, children and young adults with the full range of disabilities: cognitive, behavioral, physical, learning, and emotional and the professionals involved with them.

Our goal is to build upon the family’s strengths and foster their self-sufficiency so that they can seize their dream for their children to lead productive, independent adult lives to the greatest degree possible.

Our Objectives:

1. Offer emotional support and trainings
2. Outreach to underserved parents
3. Disseminate high-quality, relevant and useful information
4. Enhance parent-professional partnerships
5
.
Create a more inclusive community
6. Develop a team of parent volunteers

We have had a busy, productive year helping families. We provided information and support to 1300 callers through our helpline and educated over 150 participants at our special education workshops. We assisted 60 parents to participate effectively in their IEP meetings and to resolve difficulties with their school districts.

We were in the community sharing information about disabilities at Community Fairs and making presentations to first responders, child-care workers and teachers. Through our Community Advisory Council, we increased our partnerships with other agencies and school districts to better meet the needs of the families in our communities.

We had 12,000 visits to website, distributed newsletters to 1700 readers, and produced 600 packets of relevant information.

Our dedicated staff and Parent Volunteer Team helped other parents by offering emotional support, mentoring about educational issues, and attending educational meetings with them.

Professional comments after a workshop: “Helped narrow the gap between parent and professional.”Parent comments: “I am more confident.”, “I feel more empowered.”, “I feel like we are a family.”
